Business at Heart of Diabetes Campaign

Kicking off with World Diabetes Day on Monday November 14th, the West Limerick Primary Health Care team organized a series of events in Rathkeale to raise awareness of this increasingly common illness.  Over the course of four mornings the team of community health workers met with nearly 100 people who were seeking information on the prevention and management of Type 2 Diabetes.  Along with their daily stand in Eurospar, events also took place in Deel Bakery, Essence of Life and Giltenanes and O'Sullivans Pharmacies.

Deel Bakery held a day of tasting breads and cakes suitable for people with special dietary needs and there was a range of sugar-free products to taste that looked and tasted delicious. Essence of life had products and information available throughout the week. Both Giltenane's and O'Sullivan's pharmacies offered free one-to-one general health awareness consultations as part of the campaign and people could sign up at the information stand.

"This was a great example of working with the local community to meet local community needs - benefiting both local businesses and people's individual health," say organizers.  "We are delighted to work with the businesses and hope that the learning from this year will inform next year's event."

The series of events closed on Thursday last with a draw for three hampers sponsored by Essence of Life health shop and Eurospar. Three women from Rathkeale, Lucy Noonan, Eileen Culligan and Catherine Farrell were the draw winners out of the 140 entries.
