Michael Hartnett Memorial

2011 marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of Newcastle West poet Michael Hartnett.  To commemorate this milestone a new statue of the celebrated poet was officially unveiled in the Square Newcastle West on Saturday last as part of the annual Eigse festival.

Funded by West Limerick Resources under the Rural Development Programme, the bronze statue is the work of sculptor Rory Breslin and was commissioned by the local Community Council.  The group felt that while the annual festival is developing increased interest and awareness of the poet, visitors, scholars and locals at other times of the year have to date been unable to find a permanent memorial or recognition of the local writer.

The finished sculpture depicts Michael Hartnett standing on the edge of a rugged stone, stroking his chin in a poise that portrays the thinking man, solidly grounded in his community and culture, while at the same time, on edge, which is the restless condition of the poet.  The work was unveiled by fellow poet and friend Paul Durcan.  It is now hoped that this sculpture will convey a sense of local pride in the poet and also in the area that nurtured and stimulated such a wonderful and creative mind.
