New Safety Initiaitve

A newly launched Primary Health Care Programme initiative will see the Community Health Workers offer information on basic first aid and making the home safer for children to interested Traveller households in the Rathkeale area over the coming weeks. Those availing of the initiative will also be provided with a pack which includes a child safety DVD and a first aid kit.  This initiative, which is based on the national Child Safety Awareness Programme, has been developed in partnership with the Department of Public Health with many of the safety resources available for download from: http://www.healthpromotion.ie/publication/fullListing?category=Safety_and_accident_prevention.

In addition to this the Programme is continuing to roll out its Community Step Challenge over the summer months to help raise participants awareness of how active they are and encourage increased physical activity in everyday life including choosing to take the stairs, walk rather than drive to the shop or taking part in activities with their children.  It is recommended that adults should be taking up to 10,000 steps per day for a healthy lifestyle with children recommended to take 20,000 steps per day.   Participants who complete the four week challenge are automatically entered into a monthly draw with this month's winners Hannah Hehir from Askeaton and Katie O'Brien from Newcastle West.

For more information on physical activity, child safety or health issues visit www.healthpromotion.ie or contact the Primary Health Care Project for Travellers on 069 61316.
