Families gathered in Newcastle West recently to mark the end of the first Rainbows programmes in the West Limerick area. The "Celebrate Me Days", which were hosted in the Desmond Complex and Parish Centre, were held to mark the end of the journey which the young participants had taken over the programme which was designed to offer peer support to young people grieving due to death or parental separation.
Each "Celebrate Me Day" incorporated an age appropriate activity which helped reiterate for participants their journey to date in the grieving process. By adding sugar to sour lemonade the senior group learned that even difficult times can be lessened by the addition of something positive. Younger children placed their worry balls into a closed parachute but found that as they opened it up, their worries gradually began to dissipate, as the balls dropped away. Parents, young people and volunteers alike recognised the value in the events to celebrate their achievements and the steps taken by all over the twelve week programme. All participants were also presented with certificates of achievement.
The Rainbows programme is a free support group for children between the ages of 6 to 12 which runs one hour per week over a twelve week period. Run by trained volunteers, the programme is positive, gentle confidential and encouraging however it is not counseling or therapy service. It is instead a safe, confidential setting where children can share their grief associated feelings with each other and with these trained facilitators. Organisers would like to acknowledge the support of the Courtenay Boys School and Parish Centre in Newcastle West and St Mary's Boys School in Abbeyfeale who hosted the groups. It is hoped to run further programmes in the new academic year. Application forms are available from West Limerick Resources offices in Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West.
